High Commission of Sri Lanka in Ottawa Commemorates Vesak Festival 2026

HIGH COMMISSION OF SRI LANKA IN OTTAWA COMMEMORATES

VESAK FESTIVAL 2026

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Ottawa commemorated the sacred Vesak Festival 2026 on 22 May 2026 with a religious observance held at the High Commission, in keeping with the spiritual and cultural traditions associated with Vesak.

The Most Venerable Buddhist monks representing three Sri Lankan Buddhist temples in the Ottawa area- namely the Ottawa Buddhist Vihara, Hilda Jayewardenaramaya Buddhist Monastery & Meditation Centre and Ottawa Theravada Buddhist Vihara and Cultural Center - participated in the observance.

The programme commenced with religious rituals, followed by the chanting of Pirith by the Most Venerable monks, invoking blessings for the people of Sri Lanka, Sri Lankans living overseas and their families, as well as for the High Commission and its staff. Blessings were also invoked for peace, prosperity and well-being.

Thereafter, Dawal Dana was offered to the monks with the participation of the High Commission staff, in keeping with the traditional Buddhist observance of Vesak.

The Vesak observance provided an opportunity to reflect on the Buddha's teachings and the values of compassion, loving-kindness, mindfulness and peaceful coexistence, which continue to promote harmony and understanding among communities.

The High Commission continues to observe important religious and cultural occasions that reflect Sri Lanka's rich Buddhist heritage and its commitment to promoting the country's cultural traditions abroad.
